13 Fun Interior Design Definitions To Know



If you're like me and appreciate interior design, it can be helpful to have a general idea on what commonly used interior design terms mean. I know personally this is helpful to me when trying to keep up in conversation with some of my interior designer friends, when watching home reno television shows and when scrolling through interior design accounts on instagram. Below are some definitions for your consideration. Please let me know if you have anything to add to this list!


Bespoke: Something that is made custom for you.


Eclectic: A combination of various design aesthetics.


Inspired: The idea of harmony in a design scheme.


Hygge (now this is a fun one!): This is about all things cozy.


Feng Shui: The concept using energy forces to harmonize individuals with their surrounding environment.


Refined: Having many options at your fingertips, but selecting only those few pieces that complement each other.


Elevated: Something that is kicked up a notch in style or design.


Chic: Elegantly and stylishly fashionable.


Artistic: A design style that's unstructured and/or unexpected.


Clean: Linear and uncluttered style with little or no extras.


Timeless: A style that stays away from short lived trends.


Collected: A space filled with one of a kind pieces acquired over time.


Whimsical: Design elements that have a sense of humor, whimsy or evoke a smile.
